While on campus to finish my second masters degree, I was able to sample the golf courses of Michigan State University. As a student, the price of golfing either one of MSU’s two golf courses is darn near a steal. The courses are immaculate and offer some of the most extensive teaching and practice facilities I have ever seen.
On Monday evening, I played the Forest Akers – West course which features narrow fairways and raised greens. Several par fours are short, around 260 yards, but dogleg to the left, seducing an undisciplined golfer into trying a silly shot. For those who don’t like blind shots, this course features several, but with the compact layout, losing your ball is highly unlikely.
After waiting out a fast moving thunderstorm before teeing off, I had the course virtually to myself, as the Monday night league had been canceled. I shot an 87, admittedly with a few mulligans here and there.
