The White Mountains on the eastern edge of California harbor some of the oldest living objects on earth.
The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is nestled above 10,000 feet in the Inyo National Forest. Access is only available in the warmer months after the snow melts from the road. I travelled to California on spring break via Las Vegas in April 1996. I was on a photo safari, visiting some of my most treasured haunts, and adding some new sites to the mix. The road was still closed when I was there, but most of the snow was gone. So I packed my gear and hiked the final three miles up the road to capture some of my most treasured images. The pines were majestic in their solitude. I found myself shooting detail photos like this one, trying to capture how gnarly these ancient ones had grown.
